Medical Language Within the Context of Anatomy and Physiology

This illustration activity shows the human body standing upright in the anatomical position. Three anatomical planes are illustrated with transparent lines identifying the location of the three planes: the sagittal plane which divides the left and right side of the body, the frontal plane dividing front and back portions of the body, and the transverse plane dividing top and bottom portion of the body.

Activity 1 – Anatomical Positions and Directional Terms – Human Body

This activity shows an anterior view of the human head and torso. The image is highlighting the several cavities or hollowed out spaces where organs and structures are positioned. The anterior view identifies the cranial, vertebral, ventral, abdominopelvic cavities, and sections.

Activity 2 – Ventral Body Cavities

Integumentary System

This illustration activity shows a cross section of the skin containing a hair follicle. The follicle is teardrop shaped. Its enlarged base, labeled the hair bulb, is embedded in the hypodermis. The outermost layer of the follicle is the epidermis, which invaginates from the skin surface to envelope the follicle. Within the epidermis is the outer root sheath, which is only present on the hair bulb. It does not extend up the shaft of the hair. Within the outer root sheath is the inner root sheath. The inner root sheath extends about half of the way up the hair shaft, ending midway through the dermis. The hair matrix is the innermost layer. The hair matrix surrounds the bottom of the hair shaft where it is embedded within the hair bulb. The hair shaft, in itself, contains three layers: the outermost cuticle, a middle layer called the cortex, and an innermost layer called the medulla.

Activity 3 – Accessory Structure of Skin – Hair

This illustration activity shows the anatomy of the fingernail region. The image shows a lateral view of the nail bed anatomy. The proximal nail fold is the part underneath where the skin of the finger connects with the edge of the nail. The eponychium is a thin, pink layer between the white proximal edge of the nail (the lunula), and the edge of the finger skin. The lunula appears as a crescent-shaped white area at the proximal edge of the pink-shaded nail. The lateral nail folds are where the sides of the nail contact the finger skin. The nail grows distally out from the proximal nail fold. The edge of the nail is located just proximal to the nail fold. This end of the nail, from which the nail grows, is called the nail root.

Activity 6 – Divisions of the Pharynx

Urinary System

This illustration activity shows shows the location of the kidneys in the abdomen. The kidneys lie on either side of the spine in the retroperitoneal space between the parietal peritoneum and the posterior abdominal wall, well protected by muscle, fat, and ribs.

Activity 7 – Location of the Kidneys

This illustration activity shows a cross section of the left kidney. There is an outer region called the renal cortex and an inner region called the medulla. The renal columns are connective tissue extensions that radiate downward from the cortex through the medulla to separate the most characteristic features of the medulla, the renal pyramids and renal papillae. The papillae are bundles of collecting ducts that transport urine made by nephrons to the calyces of the kidney for excretion. The renal columns also serve to divide the kidney into 6–8 lobes and provide a supportive framework for vessels that enter and exit the cortex. The pyramids and renal columns taken together constitute the kidney lobes.

Activity 9 – Structure of Sperm

This illustration activity shows a detailed anatomical diagram of the male reproductive system from a lateral viewpoint. The diagram highlights the location of key components from top of the diagram is the ureter. Then from right to left is the urinary bladder followed by the seminal vesicles which are a pair of glands that secrete fluid making up a substantial portion of seminal fluid. The pubic bone is one of the three bones making up the pelvis. The vas deferens is a carrying vessel that transports sperm from the testes to the urethra. Located at the base of the bladder is prostate gland, this gland secretes nourishing fluid for sperm and becomes a component of semen. The urethra extends from the urinary bladder and carries the semen towards the penis. The penis, the external male sex organ used to inseminate a female during reproduction. The rectum is the straight portion of the lower large intestines, and the anus expels fecal matter. Located under the penis is the testes and extending from the testes is a cordlike structure known as the epididymis.

Digestive System (Gastrointestinal)

This illustration activity shows an anterior view of the head and torso of the human body with the anatomical organs and structures comprising the digestive system identified. From the top working clockwise, the illustration displays the sublingual gland and the submandibular gland, the pharynx, and stomach. The spleen is located under the left portion of the diaphragm and helps to filter blood. The large intestines include the transverse colon, ascending colon, descending colon, cecum, and sigmoid colon. A small finger-like projections hangs from the cecum known as the appendix. As a continuation of the sigmoid colon, a hollow structure known as the rectum is identified. The final segment of the digestive system is a structure measuring about 3 to 4 cm long, known as the anal canal. Fecal matter is expelled through the terminal opening in the digestive system called the anus. Labeled on the right of the diagram are the small intestines, divided into three distinct parts; the ileum, the jejunum, and the duodenum. The gallbladder is an accessory organ of digestion, and the liver is located in the upper right side of the abdomen. The esophagus connects the pharynx to the stomach. The tongue, located in the mouth, is responsible for moving the food around in the mouth during the chewing or mastication process.

Activity 23 – Structures of the Cerebrum

This illustration activity shows the anterior pituitary. The illustration zooms in on the hypothalamus and the attached pituitary gland. The anterior pituitary is highlighted. Three neurosecretory cells are secreting hormones into a web-like network of arteries within the infundibulum. The artery net is the primary capillary plexus of the hypophyseal portal system. The superior hypophyseal artery enters the primary capillary plexus from outside of the infundibulum. The hypophyseal portal vein runs down from the primary capillary plexus, through the infundibulum, and connects to the secondary capillary plexus of the hypophyseal portal system. The secondary capillary plexus is located within the anterior pituitary. The hormones released from the neurosecretory cells of the hypothalamus travel through the primary capillary plexus, down the hypophyseal portal vein, and into the secondary capillary plexus. There, the hypothalamus hormones stimulate the anterior pituitary to release its hormones. The anterior pituitary hormones leave the primary capillary plexus from a single vein at the bottom of the anterior lobe.

Activity 24 – Anterior Pituitary

This illustration activity shows the posterior pituitary. This illustration zooms in on the hypothalamus and the attached pituitary gland. The posterior pituitary is highlighted. Two nuclei in the hypothalamus contain neurosecretory cells that release different hormones. The neurosecretory cells of the paraventricular nucleus release oxytocin (OT), while the neurosecretory cells of the supraoptic nucleus release anti-diuretic hormone (ADH). The neurosecretory cells stretch down the infundibulum into the posterior pituitary. The tube-like extensions of the neurosecretory cells within the infundibulum are the hypothalamophypophyseal tracts. These tracts connect with a web-like network of blood vessels in the posterior pituitary called the capillary plexus. From the capillary plexus, the posterior pituitary secretes the OT or ADH into a single vein that exits the pituitary.
